My daughter’s teacher reached out to me recently to suggest speech therapy because she has a stutter. This caught me off guard as I didn’t realize it was becoming a problem so I reached out to @rizwana.speaks.baby to get some more insight and find out whether or not I should be worried.
⠀
This is what she had to say:
Did you know that most children experience some dysfluency early on in their childhood years? This is often a result of a burst of language development. It’s as if their brains are working faster than their mouths!
Some children outgrow dysfluent speech, while dyfluency can persist and develop into a stutter.
⠀
There is no one cause of stuttering but there are some factors that could influence a stutter. This could include a family history of stuttering, a life-changing event (e.g. birth of a sibling, loss, moving, etc), or pressure (self-imposed, parental, from teachers).
⠀
Whatever factors may be playing their part, you can help your child by:
🌻 Being patient
🌻 Listen patiently as your child communicates with you.
🌻 Remember that what they say is more important than how they say it.
🌻 Avoid completing your child’s sentences
🌻 Avoid interrupting your child, especially to instruct them to stop, breathe and try again.
🌻 Modify the environment

Need to send this to my family whos children are going through this
This is an insightful article, thank you very much
Such an awesome article, my 5 year old son stutters when he’s anxious, angry and nervous. He speaks normal when he’s relaxed. I don’t know if there’s a cure for this or he’ll grow out of it
Very insightful article. Thanks @Mumbox.
Woman are the strongest people in the world, I mean imbokodo. We uplift each other when things fall apart and build each other’s self esteem. We are the teachers, doctor’s, social workers and last hope to our kids, we can change a house and make a home. We are blessed by our creator, God.
This article is very helpful. Our family friends are going through the same situation. I will definitely send them this article. Thank you
My eight year old son used to stutter but he eventually outgrew the habit. I think we also need to be supportive as highlighted above.
A very informative and interesting article. Thank you
Great advice
Very interesting. My son stutters when he is anxious or nervous about something. Then it goes away as he relaxes. All kids are different
