The Dirtiest Spots in Your home You Didn’t Know Existed

How often do you clean your home mums and how clean do you think your home is? You would be surprised at some common hidden dirty spots we all have in our homes.

We have found 8 of the dirtiest spots in the house that you might not be aware of:

The Kitchen

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) found that areas where food is stored or prepared has more bacteria and fecal contamination than any other places in the home. More than 75% of dish sponges and rags had Salmonella, E coli and fecal matter compared to 9% on bathroom faucet handles. CRAZY we know!

Other places you need to clean frequently in the kitchen are:

  • Cutting boards
  • Coffee maker
  • Refrigerator
  • Kitchen sink and countertops

Tips to keep these spots clean would be to use disinfectant wipes, change dish towels a few times a week and remember to soak sponges in warm water with concentrated bleach to ensure the germs are killed.

Knobs, handles and switches

These places are less-than-obvious places for germs to hide and some people think the bathroom doorknob is the dirtiest place but other spots have ranked higher.

  • Bathroom light switches
  • Refrigerator handles
  • Stove knobs
  • Microwave handles

All of these spots need to be cleaned at least once a week with disinfectant wipes. It is advised that you use a new disinfectant wiper for every spot instead of reusing the same one because this could lead to a greater spread in germs.

Makeup bag

The corners of your make-up bag along with the bristles of makeup applicators are the best spots for germs to hide if you carry your makeup bag outside the house. These germs that live on your makeup brushes tend to cause skin and eye infections. It’s vital that you wash your makeup brushes once a week with regular soap and water, or by using an alcohol spray.

It is also very important that you replace your cosmetics every 6 months.

Personal Items

We all know we bring in germs and viruses from the outside when we leave our homes to go shopping or to the gym. But, surveys have found that fecal contamination, yeast and mold has been present on:

  • Cell phones
  • Keys
  • Wallet and money
  • Bottom on purses

Mums will you be dusting off your rubber gloves to give your home the extra TLC it needs to be cleaned and sterilized?
