What makes pickled red onions so healthy?

Red onions are rich in folate, or vitamin B9, which can improve cardiovascular health and reduce your risk of a stroke.

Pickled red onions contain many other vitamins and minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C. Incorporating nutrient-dense foods such as red onions into your diet can also help improve the immune, nervous, and digestive systems of your body.

Fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut or pickled red onions contain high amounts of good probiotics and digestive enzymes.

Maintaining a healthy gut flora can aid your digestion and overall energy levels. Fermented foods can even improve the quality of your skin as many skin disorders such as acne can be traced back to the gut.

However, it is important to keep in mind that pickled onions should not be consumed in excess due to their high sodium content. Those with high blood pressure or other health concerns related to sodium intake should consume pickled onions sparingly or avoid them altogether.

The health benefits of pickled and fermented foods:

  • Helps digestion – It may put you off hearing that fermented foods have live bacteria in them but don’t worry, it’s good bacteria! Known as probiotics, it’s thought to help digestive health.
  • Controlling blood sugar – The vinegar-based brine in pickles is thought to help stabilize blood glucose levels. Stable glucose levels prevent feelings of intense hunger and curb blood sugar spikes.
  • Fights diseases – Fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants which boost your immune system.

My hubby just loves his pickled onions while I prefer carrots. I can’t believe it’s so simple to make with few ingredients. I’m getting jars and I will try variety of vegetables.
